Nielsen (1865-1931)
Description:
This is a collection of colorful orchestral works by three composers active in the 19th and 20th centuries. Nielsen's "Aladdin Suite" is music for a play by Adam Ehrenschlaeger. Chowdhury, the album's conductor, describes it as a particularly captivating work. The entire work is over 80 minutes long, second only to his operas, and uses a number of techniques, including the repetition of phrases in a narrow range using oriental scales to create an exotic atmosphere, and an experimental writing style in which the orchestra is divided into four groups that play simultaneously in different keys and tempos to show the bustle of a marketplace. Other pieces include the beautiful "Love Song" by Ferstel, who continues the Czech tradition, and the familiar "Carlsbad Waltz" by Rabitsky, who was called "the Josef Lanner of Bohemia. Esther Pavlou, who sings "Love Song," is a mezzo-soprano from the Prague Conservatory. She is a talented conductor who has performed with world-class conductors such as Ilzhbyerohlávek and Pietari Inkinen. Naxos Japan
