Nino Rota
Description:
Soundtrack to Federico Fellini's 1976 Italian-American co-production Casanova, produced and released in 1976. This soundtrack is Nino Rota's musical adaptation of Federico Fellini's epic film about the legendary Venetian icon and "female gravedigger," Giacomo Casanova The film, which won an Academy Award for Best Costume in 1977, is one of Fellini's greatest works, and Casanova's life in a grotesque and hyperbolic manner, matching Rota's composition. Composed by Rota, the film is one of his most eerie and enigmatic, as if the maestro poured his love of the esoteric into the soundtrack, but like a Venetian fog, the music envelops you. The compositions are playfully nuanced, using instruments such as viola and cello, and are always on the edge of classical music. The vocals are a cornerstone of the 18th century Italian operatic tradition. But Rota also leaves room for a more experimental and bizarre atmosphere, making this soundtrack a one-of-a-kind journey into the maestro's creativity. The soundtrack won the 1977 David di Donatello Award and is considered one of Rota's most difficult works. 2LP also released. Gatefold version; 14 tracks are on first LP.
